What’s It to Me?
Cancer: Is it the beauty secret we have always looked for?

Every
American teenager has the dream of looking perfect to the opposite sex. Some young adults are pressured into
smoking by wanting to be cool. By smoking you double your chances of getting any type of cancer as soon as two
years later in life. Is that what you want for your future?
The two easiest ways to prevent cancer is to eat a healthy diet and kick out bad habits like smoking. In 1982 the Surgeon General’s Report stated that “Cigarette smoking is the major single cause of cancer mortality in the US.” This statement is still true today in 2002.
Do
you remember the Marlboro Man? He was always independent and cool because he smoked and yet later on he died
attached to several machines in a lonely cold hospital. Smoking can cause many forms of cancer such as cancer
of the lungs, mouth, throat, colon, rectum, cervix, and pancreas. Several scary facts go along with taking the
risk of getting cancer from smoking…
- Over a thousand people die a day from a cancer related death.
- 430,700 US deaths per year were attributed to smoking from 1990–1994.
- Cigarettes kill more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide, and illegal drugs combined.
- Smoking accounts for one out of every five deaths.
- 434,000 Americans die each year from smoking.
- An estimated 154,900 Americans die in 2002 from lung cancer accounting for 28% of all cancer deaths.
- Smoking is the #1 cause of any type of cancer.
- MD Anderson is one of the Largest Cancer Hospitals in the world and over 1/3 of the patients have a tobacco related illness.
